Polavaram will take more time: Officials

The Andhra Pradesh government has announced that it will complete the Polavaram irrigation project in the next three years however, the officials claim that it will take more time than expected. They say that the project is an inter-state issue and to get clearance it will take time despite measures from Centre and AP state won't help. The Telangana government is expected to approach Supreme Court and has been demanding the change of design of the dam right from the beginning. Not only Telangana state, Orissa and Chhattisgarh states are opposing the project.

Polavaram is located on river Godavari near Ramayyapet village of Polavaram Mandal of West Godavari district in AP. This is a multipurpose terminal reservoir project for development of irrigation, hydropower and drinking water facilities to East Godavari, Vishakhapatnam, West Godavari and Krishna districts of Andhra Pradesh state.

Polavaram dam will provide irrigation to 2.91 lakh hectares and hydropower, capacity of 960 MW , 23.44 tmc of drinking water and industrial water supply to Vishakhapatnam township and steel plant.  Also 80 tmc waters will be diverted to river Krishna. The annual power generation will be 2369.43 million units and in addition, 540 villages will also be provided with drinking water facilities.
