Delhi High Court upholds death penalty in Nirbhaya case

Delhi High Court on Thursday upheld the decision of death penalty to four convicts in the December 16 gang rape-cum-murder of 23 year old medical student case that rocked the entire nation. A bench of justice Reva Khetrapal and justice Pratibha Rani has been conducting a day-to-day hearing on the appeals of the four convicts.

However Special public prosecutor Dayan Krishnan has been opposing the appeals filed by the convicts and said giving the maximum sentence says that deviant behaviour of extreme kind will not be tolerated.

Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta, Akshay Thakur and Mukesh Singh raped a medical student in moving bus in Delhi on December 16th and also tortured her for hours. A Fast trial court in September granted all the accused death penalty.

The convicts lawyer said that he would appeal to the Supreme Court after the Delhi High Courts decision.
