Celebrity Corner: Veteran actor Sumalatha celebrates her birth day today.  The veteran dominated the Tollyowood in the late eighties with sensational hits with Megastar in Subhaleka, Alaya Sikaram and in the late nineties Swayam Krushi and Sruthi Layalu. Wishesh wishes Sumalatha a very 'Happy Birthday'.

Days Specialty: In  2003 Mars comes close to the Earth in nearly 60,000 years, passing 34,646,418 miles (55,758,005 km) distant.

History Speaks: In 1859  crude petroleum was discovered on this day in Titusville, Pennsylvania. Had it not been for today the dream of a global village would have taken a little longer.

Sports: Team India had a double whammy on Sunday with the colts lifting the U 19 World Cup at Townsville, Australia, defeating the former champions Team Australia in the final encounter. With this the colts lift the cup consecutively for the third time joining the elite league with the home team.

And the Seniors white washed the New Zealand team back home at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium Hyderabad on Sunday too. Though rain wrecked most of the play on the fourth day of the first test match in a two match series. Ravichandra Ashwin knocked the Kiwis out of their wits and captured 12 of their wickets in both the innings and local lad Pragyan Ojha claimed six. The spinners grabbed eighteen wickets between them, while Team India won by a margin of 115 runs and innings win against the Kiwis. For more info check our sports column.

Tirupati: Devotees rush normal. Sources say that 7 compartments were filled with devotees to have a glimpse of the Lord. Ordinary darshan shall take nearly 4 hours for the devotees in queue. For stats on Sunday 86,630  devotees visited the shrine.

Entertainment: Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Pad (Hindi) is a comedy middle aged romantic entertainer enacted by Bomman Irani and Farah Khan. The duo defy the moderns six packs and size zero, and maintain the chords with their histrionics for a romantic outing, that is sure to impress all. Sudigadu (Telugu) from Allari Naresh is an outright comedy with comical parodies in abundance from films that have rocked the box office in the recent times.

Sad New: Veteran Bollywood character actor Avtar Kishen Hangal  is no more. He passes away in a Mumbai hospital.  He had won accolades for his Namak Haram, Sholay, Shaukin and Aaina  and his debut on small screen in serial Madhubala was also acknowledged. The veteran had done prominent roles in nearly 200 films in Bollywood.

Tech tragedy: The man who took a giant leap for mankind by putting his foot on the Moon is no more. Neil Armstrong, the mission commander of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon was ailing from a heart ailment. He also served the United States of America as a Navy Fighter pilot, apart from being an astronaut.

August 31 Statewide Bandh:Statewide bandh is proposed by the YSR Congress Party led by Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy the son of the late Chief Minister Y S Rajashekar Reddy. The party plans the protest for the erratic power outage in the state.

Festival time: Onam is on the 29th  August. The festival is now national as our Malayalee friends are there everywhere. Then we have the Ganesh Chathurthi on September 19. Paper Ganesha is going viral and it is good for the environment too.  Do not forget to mark this Ganesh Chathurthi with paper Ganesha.
