Bombay High Court gives green signal to sex change operation

In a sensational ruling, the Bombay High Court has held that gender change operations are legalized and no law prohibits the same. The court gave this ruling after hearing a petition of a 21-year-old Bidhan Barua from Guwahati who wanted to undergo sex change operation. He mentioned in the plea that his parents were stopping him from undergoing the surgery. In his petition, Bidhan has also stated that he had transsexual symptoms since his birth, and he didn’t receive his parent’s care and attention.

The court said that Bidhan was an adult and he can do whatever he wishes. Therefore, he can go for a sex change operation. The court also ruled that the petitioner can write to the commissioner of police in case he gets any threat.  The court also directed the police officials to consider his application and provide personal safety to him.

Bidhan who later spoke to the media that he was happy with the court’s decision and said he would undergo a surgery.

It may be noted that Bidhan wants to marry his partner, who is a flight lieutenant.  Bidhan, a commerce student, arrived in Mumbai on March 31 with the money he saved to undergo the operation. The surgery was scheduled to take place on April 17. But, his parents objected to it seriously and the operation was called off.  His father was not present in the court when the court gave the ruling. (Phani)
