Adulteration in milk is hazardous

It is a habit of most Indians to wake up for a cup of coffee or tea in the morning and we in south India gulp more cups during the course of the day. But as per latest national survey on milk adulteration in 2011 reported some strange facts. As per the reports a cup of milk could contain starch, detergent, salt, glucose, urea and water and pesticides could be complimentary. The survey conducted massively across the country contained detergent, fat, urea and water in 68.4 per cent of the samples. `These adulterations can cause neuro toxicity, cardio toxicity, harm skin, muscles and can really paralyze a person’, say doctors.

The survey, conducted by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India to ascertain the quality of milk and find adulteration types, found all the milk samples taken from Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Daman and Diu, Jharkhand, Orissa, West Bengal and Mizoram failed the quality test. In Delhi, 50 of 71 samples randomly tested were found to be contaminated with glucose and skim milk powder, probably added to increase the volume.

The study indicates that addition of water to milk is the most common adulterant, which not only reduces the nutritional value of milk but contaminated water may also pose a health risk. And the only places to drink milk are Goa and Puducherry.
