Vietnam hospital News: US doc successfully removes 90 kilo tumour in 12-hr surgery

An operation in Vietnam hospital in Ho Chi Minh City has created lot of interest in the netizens. The operation performed by a leading U.S. surgeon McKay McKinnon on Nguyen Duy Hai (32) took more than 12 hours for successful completion, on Thursday. The patient was suffering from 'neurofibromatosis' a disease that causes disfiguring tumors to form on nerves throughout the body. A huge tumour on his right leg which weighed 198lb was his problem.

As per the medical history a tumour was growing on Mr. Hai, since his childhood and is supposed to be the biggest recorded in Vietnam. The tumour is said to have intertwined with bloody vessels making cutting it away potentially deadly. Another important aspect of the surgery was his weakened heart, so the team of eight doctors kept him upright though out the operation.

Mr. Hai is stable at the moment, but needs intense medical care under observation for several weeks. As the huge open wound might lead to an infection which could be fatal for the patient. The cost of the operation could cost Mr. Hai a fortune, but the kind doctor agreed to waive his fee. In spite of the waiver the patient has to foot a bill of VND 252million (around $12,000). His family and well wishers abroad are raising the funds to support him. The family was very thankful to Dr. McKinnon.
