Indian sports persons still banned from Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is continuing with its suspension of the Indian Olympic Association, which bans Indian sports players from participating at the Olympics. However, the newly appointed IOC chief, Thomas Bach, claims to be India's friend.

Last December, the IOC banned anyone from participating at the Olympics under the Indian flag over issues with charge-sheeted individuals and selections. The committee has been adamant with its rules of not allowing those with charge sheets over their heads to run for office.

However, the Indian Olympic Association refused to amend its ways and change its constitution. Incidentally, several state Olympic associations are under the direct influence of the politicians in power. Therefore, the selection process is severely corrupted.

With the refusal, Indian sports persons are dejected over the conduct of the nation's Olympic association. Demanding compliance, IPS officer Amitabh Thakur and social activist Nutan Thakur filed a public interest litigation (PIL) at the Allahabad high court (HC). Banning tainted officials is advantageous to Indian Sports, the petition said.

Meanwhile, the new IOC head is a 'close' friend of Indian Olympic Association secretary Randhir Singh. The latter is also a member of the IOC. The German is reportedly keen on having Indians play at the Olympics. The IOC will not tolerate tainted officials, but a solution for the issue is expected.

Bach will reportedly take a personal interest in the case and watch the proceedings first hand as part of the committee. The IOC has given India until 31st October to bring the constitution up to speed.
