US Open unfolds with a shock to SharapovaAs usual US open 2011 opened up at the Flushing Meadows, New York and the schedule runs from 29 August to 11 September. The opening day gave the run for money for the cheering tennis fans.

The high light of the day was British teenager Heather Watson, who played with exuberance and perfect game plan which at some points had taken her opponent, former world Champion, Maria Sharapova, out of her wits. The day unfolded so well that the match lasted for almost two hours and 34 minutes. But in the end the Briton had to bow down to the Russian, but with grace. Watson led 6-3 5-5 at one stage but eventually went down to Sharapova for 3-6 7-5 6-3.

Another Briton Britain's Laura Robson progressed when her Japanese opponent Ayumi Morita retired with a shoulder injury, Robson, 17, had edged a tight first set on a tie-break and led 7-6 (7-4) 1-0 after 61 minutes of play. The British number four meets Spanish 30th seed Anabel Medina Garrigues or Italy's Karin Knapp in her next match.
