UT Status sought for N. Andhra

Justice Srikrishna Committee, working on the Telangana issue ever since its formation, had received an unusual demand from the Uttara Andhra Rakshana Vedika .

The Vedika demanded the Committee to recommend Union Territory status to the north Andhra region comprising Visakhapatnam, Vijayanagaram and Srikakulam districts if bifurcation of the State was inevitable.

In case the status quo continues in the state, the three districts should be declared as backward and packages announced on the lines of the north eastern States for achieving accelerated development, the Vedika demanded in a power point presentation to the Committee. Otherwise, North Andhra will continue to be ill-treated whether or not the state is bifurcated, Justice Srikrishna Committee was told.

Forum Convener S Siva Sankar alleged that proper education was not accessible to the local people who had been losing the employment opportunities for a long time.

For the past couple of decades, locals were not given tickets by any party to contest Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha and Payakaraopet Assembly seats, he said.
