A large number of security personne in the coastal Andhra region July 07, 2011 13:20

VISAKHAPATNAM/KAKINADA: A large number of security personnel, including central forces, have been deployed in the coastal Andhra region, specially at university campuses, as part of the measures to check protestors who have intensified their agitations in support of a united state. Seemandhra students' Joint Action Committee on Wednesday issued a veiled threat to the coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema leaders that they would not remain silent if the latter do not offer resignations in case the Centre decides to woo the Telangana forces. Students of Andhra University torched an effigy of coastal Andhra politicians, demanding that they resign immediately in support of a united state. About 500 security personnel were deployed in Visakhapatnam to maintain law and order. Two platoons of special party police and one company of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and city law and order police were pressed into service on Wednesday. "We have adequate security forces here and are keeping tabs on elements which may cause disturbance. We have sent the ITBP forces along with our local forces to the university," Vizag police commissioner J Poorna Chandra Rao told TOI. "If student organisations and political parties want to take out peaceful protests, we will not object," he said. Sources said a huge number of intelligence wing cops have also been deployed. Plainclothes police personnel were seen all around the AU campus and its surroundings. Security was also tightened at the Ambedkar University in Etcherla in Srikakulam. Students of the university and various colleges in Srikakulam conducted rallies in support of united AP. Uttarandhra Vidyardhi Sena convenor S Ramana Murthy warned Telangana leaders not to provoke students from Andhra. "If they want to carry out agitations, they should do it on political lines. Students are being made scapegoats in their agitations. If the partition of the state is inevitable, then it should be divided into four states," he observed. Uttarandhra Rakshana Vedika convenor K Siva Sankar said if the central government goes ahead with the bifurcation of the state, Vizag should be made the new capital. Meanwhile, the Samaikhyandhra agitation is gaining steam in East and West Godavari districts. College students in Kakinada boycotted their classes and staged a rasta roko at Indrapalem. They threatened that they would intensify the agitation for a united AP if the Centre buckles to the demand of Telangana leaders." We won't stop our agitation until the Union government gives a categorical statement to protect the interests of united AP," said an agitator.

Telugu Warriors lost to Kannada Bulldozers in Vizag June 15, 2011 15:39

The Celebrity Cricket League, conceived on the lines of the hugely popular Indian Premier League, lived up to the billing in at least one respect. The teams that made the summit clash are from Chennai and Karnataka, just like they were at the recent IPL-4 final. However, the Telugu Warriors were found wanting as they lost to Kannada Bulldozers in Vizag — sloppy fielding and pedestrian bowling did them in. With Tarun getting hit for 35 runs in two overs and Adarsh giving away 22 runs in one over, the hosts almost threw the game away. Raja multiplied the Warriors’ woes with his misfields — even dropping a sitter. The boisterous crowd did get behind their team but to no avail. An Adarsh inswinger that trapped Bhaskar, a few good saves by Samrat and Akhil, especially when the latter jostled up the Kannada captain Sudeep, were a few highlights.“It was disappointing for us since we had a good chance of reserving a berth in the final,” said Vishnu Manchu, owner of Telugu team while his counterpart, Tamil actor Sharat Kumar, praised the Warriors “for fighting it out till the last ball.” Captain Venkatesh who cheered the team and kept offering tips to players all along was also very disappointed. “We should have bowled and fielded better, he said. The Warriors had their moments but that wasn’t enough. Adarsh’s fighting 45, Charan Teja’s tenacious 20 and Akhil’s hard-hitting half-century helped Tollywood post a decent total of 171. But the Kannadigas bulldozed it as their batsman belted the ball around. Bhaskar and Dhruv stood out with a 70-run stand that laid a strong foundation. After playing two matches for the Telugu Warriors, actor Siddharth was conspicuous by his absence at the crucial tie at Vizag. While some believed he perhaps was busy with his shooting commitments, a teammate let the cat out of the bag! Apparently Siddarth got to know about the team’s plan to drop him for the match as his performance wasn’t up to the mark. And that annoyed him. “Childish behaviour! Even Vishnu Manchu, the owner of the team who invested crores of rupees, in the larger interest agreed to sit out. Nitin and Srikant too stayed out to accommodate better players. But Siddarth took it badly. Some of his colleagues say he did message them saying he was dejected and felt cheated at being left out because he was promised to be among the playing 11. Very unsporting,” said a teammate.
