Curl your hair trendy look with hot sticks

Curls are making a comeback! A great way to create them is with hot sticks. You can add flirty curls or bouncy waves to your flat hair, or you can add corkscrews to frame your face. The steps are easy--no clips or pins--and you don't have to wear the sticks overnight. You can achieve curly, trendy hairstyles in minutes. Below are instructions for crafting perfect curls.

Set Up

There are several brands to try, including BaByliss and Conair, and the sets come in different sizes. You can't go wrong with a travel set. If you love the look, add a larger kit later.

Plug in your hot sticks and wait approximately 5-10 minutes for them to heat up. The indicator light will let you know when they are ready.

Protect Your Hair

You want curled tresses, but you also want to avoid heat damage. First, brush your hair to remove any knots or tangles. Next keep a thermal spray handy to spritz on each section of dry hair before curling. Try Tresemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Protective Spray, $5.40, at Amazon.com. Just a quick spritz is perfect--you don't want the hair wet.

Curl

Determine the size and placement of your curls. Hot sticks usually come with a couple of different size options. For tighter ringlets, use smaller sticks and for longer, loose, and bouncy curls, use larger sticks.

Comb out a small section of hair you would like to curl. Starting with the ends, wrap your hair around the hot stick. Continue to roll the hot stick upwards until reaching your scalp. Note: Avoid burning your fingers and only grasp the hot stick ends (the heat is in the center). Secure the hot stick by twisting it into a loop and inserting the peg on one end into the other end. Repeat the steps until all the sections of hair you would like curled are rolled up.

For a cute, simple style, add just a few face-framing ringlets or for more dramatic volume, create a variety of curls all over your head.

Finish and Style

Allow the sticks to remain in your hair for 10 minutes or until completely cool. When removing them, unroll the hair carefully. Tousle the curls with your fingers, or style with a pick or a comb. Tip: Don't use a brush or your curls will poof.

Hot sticks are a perfect solution for adding body to thin, flat hair. The style options are seemingly limitless. Experiment to get the hot look you want, and then embrace your new flirtatious curls.
