Indian-Origin Doctor To Become First Openly Gay Prime Minister In Ireland:- An Indian-origin doctor, Leo Varadkar is all set to become the youngest openly Gay Prime Minister in Ireland.

Varadkar (38) won the leadership race for the Fine Gael ruling party to become the country’s first homosexual PM In waiting. He will officially take over as Taoiseach, as the Irish Prime Ministerial Title is known in Ireland. Varadkar took a majority of the votes to be declared as the 11th leader of the party counting concluded in Dublin.

The final count, including all three electoral colleges, saw Varadkar win with 60% to Housing Minister Simon Coveney’s 40% votes.

When Varadkar’s father Mumbai-born Ashok Varadkar moved to Ireland from India in the 1970’she choose one of Western Europe’s most socially conservative countries to call home. And now, thirty years later, his child will be the first youngest person ever to hold the office.

Varadkar will almost certainly succeed Enda Kenny as Prime Minister, marking another symbolic moment for Ireland. He told a leading news channel, “If somebody of my age, of my mixed race background and of all the things that make up my character can potentially become leader of our country, then I think that sends out a message to every child born today that there is no office in Ireland that they cannot aspire to.”

Varadkar will also be a year younger than France’s Emmanuel Macron when he attends his first EU leaders summit later this month. Official confirmation of the Ireland’s New Taoiseach is expected to be by June 13, when the country’s Dail Parliament resumes, following a week-long break.
