Mumbai Model Convicted For Plot To Kill Filmmaker, Gets Bail

Mumbai-based model Preeti Jain who was sentenced to three years in jail, yesterday, after being found guilty of plotting to kill filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar, gets bail.

The city civil and sessions court also imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000. Preeti Jain’s request later for bail was granted by the court and her sentence was suspended for four weeks. She has been accused of hiring gangster Arun Gawli’s aide Naresh Pardeshi to eliminate director Bhandarkar in 2005, almost a year after she filed a rape case against the filmmaker. She was convicted along with other two accused. Immediately after the ruling, Jain sought suspension of sentence. Naresh Pardeshi and his aide Shivram Das have also been sentenced to three years on charges of helping her. She had allegedly given a “supari” of 75, 000 rupees to a gangster of the Arun Gaali gang.

A case was registered on September 10, 2005. Earlier in July 2004, Jain lodged a complaint alleging that Bhandarkar had raped her several times between 1999 and 2004 under the pretext of marrying her and casting her as an actress in his movies. However, In 2012, Preeti Jain’s rape case against the filmmaker was canceled by a court after she said she was dropping the charge.

Madhur Bhandarkar, is known for films like Page 3, Traffic Signal, Fashion and Chandni Bar. After the court’s verdict, Bhandarkar tweeted without taking names, “Some things are better left unsaid! Some things are better left as they are. Life moves on, so have I.”
