Indian boxing contingent for Invitational tourney in London

The Indian Boxing squad comprising of five members has left to compete the London Boxing International Invitational Tournament. The four day event begins tomorrow at the ExCel, the venue for boxing at the 2012 Olympics, and will be contested on a last-eight format in all weight divisions. The Indian squad, which has two female and three male boxers felt the tourney as part of their preparations for the 2012 London Olympics.

The Indian squad is led by five-time world champion Mary Kom (51Kgs) and World Championships bronze medalist Vikas Krishan (69 Kgs) along with Pooja Rani (75 Kgs), Dinesh Kumar (81 Kg) and Amandeep Singh (49 Kg).

Indian Boxing Federation secretary general P.K.Muralidharan Raja said it is a great initiative by the London 2012 Organizing Committee. "It will serve as a test event not just for the organizers but for the boxers as well. They will get a taste of the competition and the condition," he said.

The International Invitational event will see 104 boxers from 20 nations covering all continents showcasing their skills. Some of the world’s top boxing nations, including Ireland, Russia, Great Britain, Italy and Germany, will compete in this  Olympic Test Event.
