Heavens opened up to call off  SL-Aus tie

Sri Lanka, Australia, rains, Sangakkara, jayawardane, Tait, Brett Leet, points, colombo, world cupFor the first time in the 2011 World Cup tournament, persistent rain dampened the enthusiasm of the fans resulting in the call off the match between Sri Lanka and Australia played at Colombo yesterday.

When the heavy drizzle intervened firmly in the 32nd over of the match, Sri Lanka lost three wickets for the score of 146 runs with Captain Kumara Sangakkara was undefeated on 73 and Thilan Samaraweera on 34 Not Out. The other fickets to fell are - Upul Tharanga (6), Dilshan(4) and Mahela Jayawardane(23).

Shaun Tait and Brett Lee were the wicket-takers for Australia with one wicket each while Jayawardane was run out.  

Subsequently, both teams have been given one point each,leaving Pakistan at the top of Group A with six points from three matches. Australia have five points from three matches andSri Lanka have five points from four.

Australia next meets Zimbabwe at Pallekele on March 10, while Australia returns to India where they play Kenya three days later i.e. on March 13.
