Hyd Airport, destination for plane repairs in Asia

The international airport in Hyderabad is well equipped with the most sought after plane repairs division and is in a hands throw distance from any of the 8 SAARC countries.

The Rajiv Gandhi International airport in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh now boasts the best facility of airframe maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO). The facility provided by a venture of Malaysian Airlines is easily reachable. The airport is hardly two hours air travel from any international airport in the country. The venture, MAS GMR Aero Technic Ltd (MGAT) is also easily accessible to major international airports in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, which is an economic and political organization of eight countries in southern Asia.

The venture as quoted in The Star is posed for greater business opportunities amid its strategic location and the growing aviation sector in the country. The current India-wide fleet is estimated at 410 aircraft and this number is expected to triple in the next 10 years, making the country a huge market for MRO business. As per records the Asia – Pacific, China and India already account for a combined 23 percent of total MRO expenditure, equivalent to RM 29.6 billion.

MGAT has the capacity to service 60-80 aircraft a year and is the first third-party aircraft MRO facility of its scale in India. The world-class MRO facility with an investment of Rs.350 crore has been set up by MGAT, a subsidiary of MAS GMR Aerospace Engineering Company Limited (MGAE). MGAE is a 50:50 joint venture partnership between Malaysian Aerospace Engineering Sdn. Bhd. (MAE) and GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL). Equipped with three hangars, the facility will provide full aircraft base maintenance service infrastructure in India, and will cater to the maintenance needs of the regional and global airline customers.
