Hailstorm, Heavy Rain Cause Havoc In Hyderabad

Heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightening hit the city late in the night on Tuesday.

The unseasonal hail and thunder showers brought normal life to a halt across Hyderabad. Many parts of city witnessed heavy hailstone showers.

Reports said the storm began at 10:30 pm at Uppal, Boduppal, Habsiguda, Tarnaka, Nagole, LB Nagar, Ramanatapur and Amberpet. Trees in colonies located on the outskirts got uprooted causing widespread traffic jams in many parts of the city, and an electric transformer near Uppal junction caught fire. The area plunged into darkness. The power and telephone lines snapped in several places as the blinding rain accompanied by the strong winds forced people to remain indoors. Reports of motorists getting stuck in the downpour, came in from various parts of the city even as billboards and flexis lay uprooted and completely damaged.

Reports of storms and heavy rain were received from other area like Somajiguda, Begumpet and Kompally. Hailstorm were reported from Trimulgherry. Sudden showers lashed Banjara Hills, Begumpet, HiTec City, Malkajgiri, Ameerpet and Nampally, among other areas of the city.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials were directed by the Municipal Administration and Urban Development minister KT Rama Rao on Twitter to get the emergency teams positioned on the city roads. The GHMC twitter handle responded in an affirmative, claiming all the emergency teams have been alerted. KTR further posted on twitter:

The hail and the storm broke a few window panes in apartments and forced the electricity department to sever power distribution in several areas.

According to Indian Meteorological Department officials, the weather would continue to be the same for the next 48 hours.
