All Cows Across India Should Get Unique Identification Number : Centre To SC

A proposal in a report was submitted to the Supreme court (SC) today, in which it proposed that all cows across the country should be given a unique Identification Number for tracking.

The report was submitted to the apex court by the Central Government, in view of the cow protection and smuggling of cattle across India-Bangladesh border. A committee headed by Joint Secretary, Home Ministry, has prepared the report. Also, the BJP-led government in its report also stated that the state governments are responsible for the safety and care of abandoned animals.

According to the report, “Every district should have a shelter home of capacity of at least 500 abandoned animals. This in turn will help reduce smuggling. It has also recommended special care for cattle, beyond the milking age.” Additionally, the Centre has also been considering a  proposal to set up “cow sanctuaries” in each state, to end cow slaughter in the country.

Minister of State for Home Hansraj Ahir, last week, said, “We need to stop cow slaughter, but the biggest stumbling block is who will take care of these cows. We need to make cow sanctuaries for this, and need to make arrangements for fodder also. Each state should have cow sanctuaries. Then we will be successful in stopping cow slaughter.”

A “Project Cow”, similar to “Project Tiger” could be started and this would put a halt to farmers from selling off old cows.
