Telangana CM KCR To Meet PM Modi On Telangana Quota Issue

Telangana Chief Minister, K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR), said that he will meet Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, on April 23, in New Delhi, during a meeting called by the National Institution for Transforming India, also called NITI Aayog.

KCR said, he would request Modi to support the Telangana State Muslim quota Act, and its incorporation into the IX Schedule of Constitution to give it a legal protection.

The news spread, when KCR, left for the Legislative Council from the Assembly to introduce the Muslim quota Bill.

Earlier, on Sunday, the Telangana State Legislature passed the Act, enhancing reservations for Muslims and Scheduled Tribes (STs). Meanwhile, the entire Opposition raised their doubt in the House, over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) –led Government at the Centre, on approving the Muslim quota hike.

Mr Modi recently attended the BJP’s National Executive meeting, in Odisha, where he talked about the backwardness among the Muslims. He also stated that more inclusiveness is needed for those, who are backward, among the Muslim community. “In many regions, there are Muslims, who are backward. The party and governments should ensure that they benefit from the new-look backward commission which has been given a Constitutional status,” said Modi.

An elated KCR, on Modi’s remarks said, “This is a good sign for us, which has in fact given me confidence that the Centre will approve our Act.”

As per the Bill, passed on Sunday, there would be a substantial increase in the reservation for backward Muslims, and STs, taking the total quotas in Government jobs and educational institutions, much beyond the 50% limit set by the Supreme Court. Except the BJP, all the parties supported the Bill. The BJP MLAs were suspended form the House, after they protested against communal reservations.

Mr Rao said, over the two decades, “Tamil Nadu has been giving around 69% reservations, while a few North-Eastern States are giving up to 80% reservations. Even the BJP-ruled states, like Rajasthan and Gujarat are seeking more than 50% quota, with Maharashtra implementing 52% quota. We too want similar exemption, as 90% of the State, comprises backward classes (BCs), Scheduled castes (SCs), STs and other minorities. The CM further appealed to the Centre to provide power to implement reservations.  He said, he will mobilize the support of other states CMs to achieve this. The party MPs will fight in Parliament to secure the Centre’s approval for the Telangana State quota Act.

“Each state has its own social composition. A flat 50 per cent quota for all states is not practical. The Centre should let the states decide on reservations,” Mr Rao said.
