Hyderabad Youths Harassed by NIA Officials

In a shocking incident, two youths, who were detained last year by the police alleged that officers of National Investigation Agency were harassing them and threatening to book false cases if they fail to act as witnesses.

Mohammed Adnan Ahmed of Hyderabad and Mohammed Nomaan Jameel of Karimnagar were detained along 14 other young men in 2014 by the Telangana police.

On Tuesday, their families held a press conference at Somajiguda. They told media that the Union government and the State government were trying to book false cases on them.

Mohammed Adnan Ahmed (24), a software engineer from Chandrayangutta, alleged that on July 1, he received a call from NIA. He was asked to visit their office in Begumpet. But, when he visited the NIA office, the officials allegedly forced Adnan to sign papers and asked him to become a witness in a case. They also asked him to go to New Delhi to record his statement on July 8.

Adnan said, “On July 1, I was called to the NIA office in Begumpet. They took my signatures on some papers and asked me to become a witness in the recent case of arrests made by the NIA in Hyderabad. They threatened to arrest me if I do not go to Delhi and record my statement. I do not know why the officers are trying to involve me.”

Adnan added that he was planning to go to Turkey in 2014. But later cancelled it through the travel agent. He was picked up by the police and counselled for having sympathetic ideology towards ISIS, which he claimed was not true.

Mohammed Nomaan Jameel (23), a civil engineering graduate from Karimnagar, was also detained by the police who accused him of being an IS sympathiser.

Nomaan said, “I was searching about Iraq and Syria and some other countries due to the anxiety of knowing what was happening there, but the police picked me up and alleged that I was an IS sympathiser and counselled me not to browse such websites and watch videos.”

Nomaan also received a call from NIA about a month ago. Some officers asked him to become a witness in a case and threatened to book him in a false case if he failed to go to Delhi and do as directed.

Nomaan added “I received a call last month before the recent arrests in the city. On July 3, they called me to the NIA office and took some signatures on some papers. When I tried to read what was written on them, the officers snatched away the papers and said they would send flight tickets for New Delhi and told me that I had to come on July 8.”

Parents and relatives of the young men questioned the government. They said if browsing websites and watching videos on the internet is an offence, why does the government allow such websites to be active and why don’t they deactivate or ban them. They also requested government not to harass their children and allow them to live peacefully.
