Rape Remark of CBI Director Antagonize Woman Rights Activists

The CBI Director Ranjit Sinha used an old saying in a new context that caused woman rights activists get furious.

The saying "if you cannot stop rape, you enjoy it" is not only an old one but also inappropriate one.  The actual saying as a joke is "The best way of avoiding rape is to enjoy".   When one enjoys it ceases to be a rape.  It is ok for laughs but not good to quote in the present scenario of increase violence against women in the country.   Rape is such a horrible experience that cannot be advocated to enjoy.

The point Ranjit Sinha was making was in fact a valid one to make one think about it but drowned in the wrong quotation.  Ranjit Sinha expressed his personal opinion that betting can be legalized and made a source of revenue to the Government instead of making a source for black money.  He said that the States are running lotteries, casinos are run at tourist places and even Government is coming up time and again with voluntary declaration of black money then why not legalize the betting is the question Ranjit Sinha asked on Tuesday in the International conference on corruption at Delhi.

But the next sentence weakened Ranjit Sinha's first statement. He said, "It is better to have something, legalise it, and earn some revenue rather than throwing up your hands and letting things happen."

The Investigating Agency asking to change laws to accommodate an anti social activity so that its work can be reduced!

It seems no lessons are learnt from Chidambaram's remarks and warnings to CBI.  The Union Minister Chidambaram on Tuesday asked the investigating agencies to draw a line between policing and policy making and respect that line.  But as the speech of the CBI Director must be a pre-prepared one that did not get an impact from Chidambaram’s showing CBI the place it belongs to and the limitations it has to follow.
