City alerts to fifth blast anniversary

The city alerts to the fifth anniversary of the Mecca Masjid bomb blast today. Security was intensified in the old city and surrounding areas. The police officials geared up the regular measures and placed more people in force at vantage points to avoid any untoward incidents. High end security arrangements were in place at tourist spots like the mosque, Charminar and other monuments in the old city, as well as across the city. Vehicle-checking and patrolling will be intensified.

A cell phone-triggered bomb went off at the historic Mecca Masjid during Friday prayers on May 18, 2007, killing nine people, while five protesters died in police firing after the blast.
