Students Turn into Chain Snatchers in Hyderabad

Chain snatching cases have been increasing in Hyderabad. More shocking isthat students are involved in chain snatching. Police have arrested many chain snatchers in the city out of which around 25 per cent are students.

The students are mostly college students who are continuing studies while others are dropouts. Police said “many of these students are from well to do families.”

According to the police the Chain snatcher gangs hail from northern states. They either belong to the Bavaria gangs of Uttar Pradesh or Irani gangs from Karnataka.

Police said “these gangs operate only after surveys and with detailed planning. They operate in twos and after snatching a considerable quantity of gold, they go into hiding. Their main target are women who are alone on road. If they see any single woman walking on the road or cleaning the courtyards of houses they rob them.”

Police added that students basically get addicted to chain snatching as they want money for their expenses. They want to live a luxurious lifestyle due to which they choose chain snatching as a way to luxury.

Police say that “students who are caught in chain snatching cases, though not from very high class families are in the well to do category.”

“Lack of monitoring by parents and control on their desires, is making them commit such offences. In most cases, the chain snatching victims lose their mangalsutra, which they view as sacred. If the student snatchers know the value of it they will not resort to such offences,” a senior city police official said.

According to the latest reports the chain snatchers who are arrested are mostly students. Around 2 percent are engineering graduates, 20 per cent have completed intermediate, some are graduation dropouts, 20 per cent have completed SSC, and some are working. Around 65 snatching cases were registered in Hyderabad till July 31.

In Cyberabad West commissionerate, six students were arrested in 2016. In East commissionerate, 14 students were arrested.
