HCU: Rohith Vemula’s mother says, her family is being isolated

HCU Student, Rohith Vemula’s mother Radhika, has asked the government how long after her son’s death, should they wait for the right justice.

Along with her elder son, Raja, yesterday, Radhika addressed a press conference saying, “While the killers of my son provided police protection, those who are supporting us are arrested and put behind bars. Our family is being isolated.

“In SC, ST Atrocity cases, the accused has to be arrested within 24 hours, but University of Hyderabad Vice-Chancellor Appa Rao has not even been questioned and at the same time false cases are being slapped against the students,” she said.

On the other side, Raja severely condemned the police’s reaction on the girl students of HCU, who allegedly even threatened them, speaking about “rape”.

HCU’s assistant professor, P. Anupama said, “I was deeply distressed witnessing the unbelievable violence of the police”. She compared living on-campus to that of a military rule and pointed out that the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) committee had held the university administration responsible for Rohith’s suicide and VC Appa Rao, had no right to continue in his position.

Targeting TRS government in the state, academic and activist G. Haragopal questioned Telangana Chief Minister KCR’s silence and allowing the police to lathi-charge students on the campus.

Mr. Haragopal was speaking on ‘Social Inequalities: Caste and Religious Discrimination in Universities” organised by Save Education Committee, Telangana. He objected to Vice-Chancellor Appa Rao rejoining office even when a judicial inquiry was on.

“It is an accepted principle that till a judicial inquiry is completed or the High Court gives orders, the VC is not supposed to assume charge. We demand that Appa Rao voluntarily step down till the inquiry is over,” he said.

Not stopping there, he further requested the student groups of HCU, including ABVP, to unite to save the university setting aside political leanings.

Haragopal severely condemned the way, students and faculty members were treated and arrested by the police.
