Ashok Singhal, 89, VHP (Vishwa Hindu Parishad) senior leader, has passed away just a while in Gurgaon. Praveen Togadia, deputy in the VHP, has confirmed Singhal’s death.
Singhal, was diagnosed with right lower Lobe Pneumonia, and was put on a ventilator, three days ago. Even Home Minister Rajnath Singh and other BJP leaders, had visited him, at Gurgaon’s Medanta Hospital.
Even on October 20, Singhal was referred to the same hospital, but he was discharged after his health condition was found to be satisfied.
Ashok Singhal had participated in the Ram Temple movement, seeking to build a temple at the same site in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya, where Babri Masjid, once stood. The mosque, which many believe, was built on the birthplace of Lord Ram, was demolished in 1992, by a Hindu mob.
Singhal moved to the VHP as the joint general secretary after Meenakshipuram conversions in 1981. “VHP built 200 temples for Dalits and after that, the conversions were stopped,” Singhal said.
In 1984, Singhal was a key organizer of the first VHP Dharma Sansad, held at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi. He attracted the hundreds of sadhus and Hindu notables to discuss the issues of rejuvenating Hinduism.
