Narendra modi launches Air Quality Index

Modi will launch the first national air quality index regarding  the government's fight against air pollution on Monday. The index will inform the public about the pollution level in the air day to day in real time.

The main aim behind this project is to give people access to real-time information of the quality of air they are breathing. The Air Quality Index is a global standard used to understand quality of air. It uses parameters available in our national air quality standard. Aim behind this project is to give people access to real-time information of the quality of air they breathe.

The ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) wants the project to be financed as a public-private partnership (PPP)- ministry is completely low on the funds and project costs around Rs.500 crore which is difficult for the ministry to arrange those funds at this level. For 2015-16, the ministry's is only around Rs.1681.60 crore which is already allocated to wildlife conservation.

Anumita Roy Chowdhary, executive director (research and advocacy) at Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) an environmental non-governmental organization (NGO) said, “Yes, funding is a challenge because air quality monitoring is expensive. But the good part is the government for the first time is making a serious effort to tell people about the daily quality of their air, which people can understand in a simple way and after the success of this project, the next step would be to tackle pollution,”

According to sources in the Central Pollution Control Board, there is no plan to take any action even if pollution levels remain severely high.
