New Governors in next few days

The Union Home Ministry is considering to appoint 6 to 7 new Governors in the next two to three weeks, with the tenure of few of them, is coming to an end. Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil will retire on January 21, Himachal Pradesh Governor Urmila Singh will complete her five-year tenure on January 24 while there are vacancies in Governor posts in Bihar, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura states. With this appointment the government wants to reduce the burden on Governors who are in charge of other states too.

West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi is holding additional charge of Bihar and Meghalaya, while Nagaland Governor P.B. Acharya holds additional charge of Assam and Tripura states and  Uttarakhand Governor K.K. Paul is holding additional charge of Manipur. After coming to power in May, the NDA government has so far appointed Governors to Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Haryana, Kerala, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Nagaland and Goa states.

Tamil Nadu Governor K.Rosaiah and Odisha Governor S.C. Jamir are the only Governor appointed by the previous UPA government, still holding their chairs. Both are expected to retire in the next few months. However, the NDA government is likely to continue ESL Narasimhan, who is serving as Governor for the Telugu speaking states, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
