The Indian version of the Spanish running of the bulls is all set to be conducted in Rangampet, Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh. The village is gearing up to conduct the traditional Jallikattu on the third festive day of Sankranti or Pongal, known as Kanuma or Mattu Pongal.
The annual event has wide patronage with visitors from across Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, in addition to locals.
However police have warned of such events that harm the animals and humans as well. The administration has warned of any such events due to the heavy causalities reported every year. Yet the organizers are going ahead with their plans, claim sources.
Though Jallikattu is a bull event similar to Spanish running of the bulls, the similarity ends there. Jallikattu is the most traditional event in which the 'Matadors' are not allowed to use weapons or harm the bulls. The event predominantly played around Madurai has claimed nearly 200 lives over the last two decades but still it is loved by many. (Wishesh AarKay)
