KG to UG Telugu compulsory

The state government is proposing to make  Telugu compulsory to learn at all levels from primary to degree levels. It also plans to give additional weightage to Telugu medium students with an additional five marks during recruitments.

The proposed plan is on the desks of the Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and will be formally announced after the official green signal from him is received, said Official Languages Commisiion Chairman Buddha Prasad.

There is a divided opinion over the implementation. While it is a welcome decision to give importance to the official language, but that should not be an hindrance to learning the business language, English.

While making Telugu as a compulsory subject in educational institutes the government must also ensure better teaching aids in English. By doing so, students gain skills in two languages and makes them fit for jobs in the state and elsewhere too. (AW-AarKay)
