Most hospitals in Hyderabad not equipped to tackle fire accidents

GHMC Commissioner Mr M. Krishna Babu said today that 431 hospitals situated in and around the city do not have NOCs (No Objection Certificates) and his officials have served notices asking them to establish fire-safety systems in their hospitals with in a month.

“We have some 580 hospitals in our jurisdiction and only 149 of them have systems to protect them from fire,” he told a press conference. “We have asked them to take necessary measures with in a month. The licenses of those hospitals which do not cope up with the necessary measures will be cancelled,” he warned.

The GHMC conducted am inspection on city hospitals in the wake of the fire accident in the AMRI hospitals in Kolkata last week in which 90 persons lost their lives and several others sustained serious burn injuries. “The inspection had revealed that majority of hospitals were not equipped with fire safety measures,” he said.

Mr Krishna Babu said that his officers would conduct from tomorrow inspection of shopping malls, hotels, hostels, function halls and commercial complexes in and around the city to find out if they were equipped with fire-proof systems. (JUBS)
