Village of 2800 vows to donate eyes

The people of an entire village in Vijayanagaram district today vowed to donate their eyes post their death.

The 2800 villagers of Konuru in the Garividi Mandalam of the district signed the eye-donation papers in the presence of revenue officials. Maanaviyatha, an NGO working in the district, has been conducting awareness camps for the last few days in some villages of the Mandal on eye-donation.

The representatives of the NGO have also attended the signing ceremony and said they would work to create awareness in villages of other Mandals of the district on eye-donation.

Reports indicate that nearly 4.5 million people in India are handicapped by the corneal blindness that is curable through corneal transplantation. Eye donation will help restore vision to such people.

Majority of the corneal transplantations are carried out successfully in India restoring vision to thousands of people having corneal blindness. Corneal transplantation in infants born with cloudy cornea can make a big difference to their lives.

Eyes which cannot be used for corneal transplantation are normally used for research and education purposes.
