akkhanAlleging that the registered clubs have been resorting to pure gambling, Hyderabad police commissioner AK Khan ordered the closure of registered clubs in the Hyderabad city. In the last four days, around 22 clubs faced closure on his orders.

The clubs that were forced to close are Elite Club on Road No. 4, Jubilee Hills, Jubilee Hills International Club in Venkatagiri, Film Nagar Cultural Centre in Film Nagar, Global Family Club on Road Number 13, Banjara Hills, Country Club in Begumpet, Chiraan Fort Club, Family World Club, Celebrity Club in Begumpet, Nainy Hitec Club, Mahindra Sports and Cultural Club, GVR Cultural Society in Bowenpally, New Club, Friends Club in Saidabad, Kartik Club in Afzalgunj, Darby & Balaji Clubs in Kacheguda, Deccan Club, Sri Mahalakshmi Sports and Cultural Centre and Epitome Club near Osmania University.

The cards section of Secunderabad Club, which has been maintaining a cards room for the last 80 years, was also closed down on the orders of the CP.

The AP High Court had ruled in 1997 that there was no need for the registered clubs to take police permission to run their recreational activities as they were catering to the registered members and their guests only.

Police however allege that the clubs, in the name of entertaining members, are allotting most of their space for gambling activities and collecting money from the members in the name of maintenance fund which is illegal.
