Cleaning Ganga brings good results

The 2,525-km-long Ganga river is not only considered holy by Hindus but is also a lifeline to millions. However it is the most polluted rivers in the World and so the NDA government took up the task of cleaning it. But apart from government, there are many independent organisations [NGOs] which are already working on it.

The latest cleanliness drive of Ganga river is bringing positive results and the researchers are quite with the way things are shaping up. Researchers who are closely observing the cleanliness drive say that the aquatic life in the river has improved a lot but utmost care is more needed to restore the river. According to the fresh updates, the temperature of the water dropped from 19 to 18.1 degrees Celsius and this is good sign for the aquatic life. Researchers Sushill Bhadula and B.D. Joshi released a statement regarding this which said, “Temperature affects the metabolic rate in the aquatic environment. It was great to see a reasonable change in the same.”

The cleanliness and the awareness campaign was conducted by Haridwar based spiritual group Shantikunj as a part of its nationwide Clean Ganga drive and is also motivating nearby people not to throw any kind of wastes in the river. The transparency level of the Ganges increased by almost 1.5 times, from 18 cm to 30 centimetres as of October 14th. The better the reach of sunlight into the water, the more life for the aquatic plants. While the chloride level decreased significantly from 26 mg/l to 16 mg/l and the TDS [Total Dissolved Solids] came down to 102 mg/l from as high as 210 mg/l.

However, government has to step into action for this. Apart from allocating separate budget, NDA government hasn't done anything so far as also the Supreme Court is taking note of all the government activities in this regards. But the Supreme Court is giving a nod for volunteers who are coming forward for this cause.
