Amritsar soon to have pod cars criss-crossing the city

Soon a journey in Amritsar to see the Golden Temple could amuse you with chauffer less cars which runs without big tyres and consumes no fossil fuels!! Astonished that is what the Punjab Government is planning to do to Amritsar. A pod car is going to be operational soon, though the project is yet in an infant stage.

Sources reveal that the Punjab government has reached an agreement with Ultra Fairwood to build the personal rapid transit system. The company announced this week that the pod car would be similar to the one tested at the Heathrow Airport in London, by ULTra Global PRT.

Fraser Brown, managing director of ULTra Global PRT, said media interview that the system would consist of 200 automated electric pods, roughly 10 times the number operating at Heathrow, and would shuttle an average of 100,000 passengers per day over 3.3 kilometers, or roughly two miles, of track. Among the route's seven station stops would be the city's principal bus station, the railroad terminal and the Golden Temple, a major Sikh shrine. He further said building the right pod for the suitable climatic conditions, shall begin in 2012, probably service by 2014.

Pod cars are automated vehicles that carry up to six passengers who are traveling together to the same destination. The cars ride on dedicated guide-ways above or alongside automobile and bus traffic. Propulsion is provided by an electric motor, and the car rides on small rubber tires.
