Dowry, social evil: Educated doc in bars for demand in Mumbai

The Dowry system is a social evil. It is prevalent in all parts and almost in all communities in India. It appears that initially the custom of dowry was aimed at assisting the newly-wedded couple to set up an establishment of their own without much difficulty. But with the passage of time, this custom instead of proving a help to the newly-wedded couple has virtually corrupted the institution of marriage itself. The educated are to bring the change in curbing the growth of this social evil.  But if the highly educated resort to such heinous acts they must be condemned and punished, so that even the others who have slightest thoughts will refrain from the act.

It was a shameful case that came to light on Sunday in Mumbai. In which a doctor to set up a clinic demanded two lakhs from his in-laws for money and they could not afford it. Dr Narendra Nanaware (33), along with his mother Janabai and brother Sanjay tortured his wife Shilpa Nanaware (22), with in twenty days of his arranged marriage. Shilpa lodged a complaint with the local police station and the police arrested them. The police are also on the lookout for the doctor’s father Sopan who is still at large.

The girl’s father, Ramesh Dambere said, `It was an arranged marriage. At the time of the wedding, the Nanawares demanded a huge amount from us. Keeping in mind my daughter's future, I somehow managed to meet their demands. However, after just 20 days of the wedding, they started harassing my daughter for money as Narendra wanted to open a clinic. However, with my small cobbler shop, it was beyond my capacity to once again arrange for such a huge sum.’
