Congress leader Kamal Nath is likely to become the leader of opposition as Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have declined the post taking the responsibility of election debacle. Congress's strength in the Lok Sabha is 44 and with its allies the number increases to 56. To become the opposition in Lok Sabha 55 is the bench mark.
However, Trinamool Congress which won 34 seats in West Bengal and Jayalalitha's AIADMK won 37 seats in Tamil Nadu could ask for main opposition which could hit Congress chances. But it all depends upon the Speaker's decision and he/she has the authority to lower the margin for a party to form an opposition in the Lower House.
Congress Parliamentary Party will decide on the leader of opposition which is slated for this weekend.
