Tihar jail has entertained inmates

India's largest bastille and model jail - Tihar Jail - has got its own FM radio station now.

In a first of its kind of initiative, an FM station was launched by Director General of Prisons Vimla Mehra at Central Jail No. 4 in the Tihar jail. The radio station is called 'TJ FM Radio'.

Talking about it, Tihar Jail spokesman Sunil Gupta said, "The FM Radio has been established to meet the twin objectives of entertainment and training of prisoners as Radio Jockey (RJ). The prisoners can engage themselves in creative activities and also get trained as Radio Jockey (RJ)."

He further said that if prisoners want to request a song of their choice, they will have to propose the song in advance to the RJs so that it can be aired.

Furthermore, Tihar Jail administration, in association with an NGO "Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Sansthan", also launched a Khadi unit or 'Charkha Khand' (spinning wheel unit) in the Central Jail, that was inaugurated by Mehra as well.

"This has been done to spread the teaching of non-violence and communal harmony propounded by Gandhiji," the Jail spokesperson added.

Tihar Jail is also the first prison in the country to have drug de-addiction and Vipassana meditation centres.

Tihar Jail is currently home to 12,000 inmates.
