Audi's "big" India dreams!

German luxury car makers Audi, owned by the Volkswagen Group, might start manufacturing cars in India very soon. This certainly spells good news for Audi fans as that could bring down its prices considerably, making it easier for aspiring Indians to own an Audi.

Motivated by its burgeoning market in India, Audi is planning to start manufacturing its makes, instead of just assembling them, in Volkswagen's Chakan plant in Maharashtra.

Of late, Audi officials have made a spate of visits to the Chakan plant to study the possibility of producing cars in India. The models in consideration are Audi's upcoming cars like A3 compact and Q3 compact SUV's. The picture would get clear withing a year.

Talking about the prospects, Audi India Head Micheal Perschke said, "The current volumes that we have on the current models do not justify a full-blown production, however, the group is looking at different business models. We do a certain level of purchasing together with our affiliates in Chakan. Our board is trying to look at what kind of game plan we should have in the next 5-10 years."

Perschke also told that as per the company policy, to start manufacturing cars in India, Audi will have to touch the 10,000 units mark first.
