Chilly New year for Delhi

The new year in Delhi began with extremely harsh and biting cold which took the temperatures closer to the freezing point of water than ever since 2006. 21 years ago, in 1992, the temperatures dipped below 1 degree Celsius and then the cold experience never repeated until Jan 8, 2006. On Sunday, the temperatures seemed to be closing the freezing point again by recording the lowest since Jan 2006. On Sunday, the mercury stood still at 1.9 degree Celsius. This is the second lowest temperature in the city since 21 years.

On Jan 2, 2008, too, Delhi had the same temperature but never lower. The winds from Himalayas has been making it hard on the cities in the North of India. Hisar, Haryana froze with temperatures that dipped below -1.1 degrees.

The number of people who were falling prey to the cold savage winds have been rising. The cold wave in North India has claimed over 155 lives already in UP alone.
