Mamatha threatens agitation against digitization

On Tuesday, Mamatha Banarjee threatened the Center that she would go on an agitation if the television transmissions were blacked out after October 31. This was the deadline provided to a few cities for the digitization of the tv transmission. Mamatha also accused the Center to be playing the trick of "confrontation" with the states in the same matters.

Talking at a press conference, "When set top boxes are not in hand, analog system should be allowed to continue and the Centre has no right to blackout television. We can't simply accept this stand of the Centre," Banerjee said.

She regretted that she had not received a reply though she communicated the issue to the Center in June asking for an extension of the proposed deadline as she added that she would make the agitation nationwide if required. "If necessary, we will launch a statewide movement and later spread it to the whole of India."

She accused the Center of favoring confrontation of the states on the digitisation matters.
