Manesar plant resumes operations today

After a month of being out of operations, the Manesar Plant of the Maruti Suzuki India had decided to roll up the shutters today on Tuesday. Police forces will offer protection to the plant today. The manpower is expected to be ten times lesser than its full force and the initial work schedule is expected to operate only for a single shift.

Following the incident, Maruti Suzuki India's plant in Gurgaon had announced that the plant would be shut down for an unknown period of time after the violence and vandalism that occurred on July 18 in which a senior manager of the plant was set on fire and killed apart from injuring more than 100 people. It was also recorded to be the worst ever such incident in the history of the plant.

The Chief Operating Officer of Administration of the MSI said that the initial force would be just 300 people who would work for a single shift.

The initial turnover of cars expected is also expected to see a ten fold short fall compared to the average rate of churning out the vehicles at this plant. The usual 1500-1700 figure is expected to drop as low as 150 per day. With progress in time and manpower, the company is expected to gradually bring the production to a full-fledged level. This plant, the sole manufacturer of the best selling hatch back Swift, has a annual production capacity of 5.5 lakh units.

Ex-servicemen were reinstated along with large numbers of policemen near the plant to ensure security at the plant. Earlier a few days ago the plant had fired almost 500 permanent workers who were found to be involved in the incident inside the plant and the sources inside the plant say that they plan to oust 500 more employees who were taken in as contract workers as they are also suspected to be involved in the violence.

Of the initial strength of 3,300 workers in the plant, 1,528 people were permanent workers. Starting 2 September the organization has planned the recruitment of permanent workers while considering the contract workers for the same positions.
