Rajiv Gandhi award to be given to D R Mehta

DR Mehta is the founder of a charitable organization, Bhagavan Mahaveer Viklang Sahitya Samiti BMVSS, which was set up in 1975. BMVSS works toward providing the physically disabled with artificial legs which are popularized by the name Jaipur Foot.

The Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award has a citation and a cash of Rs 5 Lakh. D R Mehta is also the former chairman of the Securities and Exhange Board of India. He has been nominated for his "outstanding contribution towards promotion of communal harmony, peace and goodwill".

Today, thanks to the BMVSS, the Jaipur foot is a very popular name among all the war devastated countries across the world. This knee that is fit below the knee has changed the lives of several thousands of people who have lost their feet in land mines.

Mother Teresa, Ustad Bismillah Khan, Lata Mangeshkar, Sunil Dutt and Dilip Kumar were all the other important people who have been given the honor of this award earlier.

On the birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi,August 20th, DR Mehta would join the likes of these people after the presentation of the award by All India Congress Committee in a special ceremony.
