33 organ donations in the city this year

The faith in humanity has been restored with over thirteen families donating the organs of their beloved family members who have been declared brain dead by the doctors in 9 different hospitals.  The organ donations include 23 kidneys, 9 livers and one lung donation already this year.

The scretary general of the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre, Sujata Patwardhan, has said that the donations reflect the motivation in the people to donate the organs. Government has also working on several ways to increase the organ donations.

The cadaver donation programme which was started earlier in 1997 would reach new speeds with this incident, hope the experts, July 11th marked a significant day in the history of transplantation in Mumbai as the city witnessed the first ever lung transplant in the city. A Vile Parle resident  successfully underwent the first lung transplant. This would provide impetus to the potential donors to no only donate the kidneys and livers but also lungs.

As of now ZTCC has already received over 251 kidneys, 36 livers which were donated between March 1997 and January 2012. However this is much lower than the organ donations in Tamilnadu which have crossed the 650 mark in just three years from 2008 October to January 2012.
