Former Karnataka Chief Minister Bangarappa dies in early hours

Sarekoppa Bangarappa who was suffering from kidney related problems and a diabetic, was undergoing treatment since December seven. He breathed his last at about 00:45 am, sources said. He is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters. He was born on October 26, 1932, and held BA and diploma in social science degrees.

The septuagenarian was first elected to the Karnataka Legislative assembly in 1967 and was remarkably, the member of the house till 1996. He was also the President of the Congress Pradesh Congress Committee. In 1990-92, he was the Chief Minister of Karnataka. Then he concentrated on the central politics and was elected to Lok Sabha in 1996, 1999, 2003 and 2005. In his long career he had strayed away from Congress and ventured into the BJP and Samajwadi parties, but finally came back into the Congress fold. But as Congress man in 2009 he faced defeat at the hands of former Chief Minister’s Yeddyurappa’s son, B Y Raghavendra.

A highly respected leader known for his integrity, had always voiced his concern, sternly for the state issues and played a pivotal role in the development of the state. His death was condoled by the Governor and the Chief Minister of Karnataka.
