18 infants die in Kolkata Children’s hospital

ChildrendiedIn an embarrassing development for the Mamatha Banerjee Government, 12 infants died in the last 48 hours at the most famous B C Roy Children’s hospital in Kolkata.

This is second such happening in the hospital in the last five months. In June, 18 infants had died in the same hospital in a gap of 24 hours and the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had ordered an inquiry. No one knows what has happened to the inquiry.

Hospital superintendent Dilip Roy said that the deaths of the infants occurred due to delayed admission. “Delayed admission of the infants in a highly critical condition is leading to the deaths,” said Mr Roy.

Mr Roy however said there might be some problems with some of the hospital staff and they are trying to improve the situation to the best of their ability.

He said there was no space to set up a blood storage unit and CT scan facility in the hospital. “There are no funds too. The government has not released any funds for the hospital,” he said, adding that a lab facility, X-ray and ultra sound units are the immediate requirements.
