Congress president Sonia Gandhi will undergo a surgery in the US in a day or two for a diagnosed medical ailment.

Revealing this at a media conference in Delhi today, Party General Secretary Janardhan Dwivedi said senior physicians advised the 64-year old leader to go to the US and have the surgery for a particular medical problem.

“Sonia Gandhi left for the US on the advice of doctors  and after the surgery, she needs to take rest for two or three weeks,” Dwivedi said, adding, that Sonia Gandhi constituted a four- member committee to look after the party affairs in her absence.

The committee, consisting of AK Antony, Rahul Gandhi, Ahmed Patel and Janardhan Dwivedi, will look after the party affairs as she would be away in the US for two / three weeks recuperating after the operation.

Senior party leaders had earlier said that Sonia could not attend an important core group meeting of the party on July 31 as she was running a viral fever.

Soon after the news broke out, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, tweeted on his page, “Have come to know through media about Mrs Sonia Gandhi's surgery. I pray for her speedy recovery and good health.”
