Resident Doctors In Maharashtra Call Off Strike March 25, 2017 10:19

The Resident Doctors in Maharashtra have resumed their duties, and called off their five - day strike. This move was taken, after the Maharashtra Chief Minister, Fadnavis, gave an ultimatum to the striking resident doctors, to resume their duties or face legal consequences. Earlier, in the state legislative Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis condemned the attacks on doctors, and personally appealed to them to resume work. “As the head of state, I am willing to plead the doctors with folded hands to get them back to work. But this will be the last time. After this, strict action will be taken. We cannot show any mercy, nor forgive doctors who are leaving patients to die.” said Mr. Fadnavis. “If the doctors are continuing strike, leaving patients to die, it shows a high degree of insensitivity.” “It shows they forgot the pledge they take when joining the noble profession,” Fadnavis added. Along with 40,000 medical practitioners associated with the IMA, more than 4,500 resident doctors had gone on a mass leave for the last five days. The reason for the strike was due to the series of assault, which took place on resident doctors, in various parts of the state. Secretary of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Dr Parthiv Sanghvi, said all the 40,000 doctors have reported back to work immediately. A fruitful decision took place, between IMA and the Maharashtra Government, said Mr. Sanghvi. The CM has promised to fulfill our demands of providing additional security, added Sanghvi. The High Court said the authorities to permit only two relatives per patient in the hospital. The government should deploy security at various hospitals as assured, added the High Court. Dr.Amit, from the Nair Hospital informed that they had called-off their mass bunk and would resume their duties with immediate effect. “The Government has given us assurance verbally, but we wanted an assurance in writing which we have got today.” The government has said that it will fulfill our demands such as security, two-pass system, alarm system within 15 days, said Mr. Nair. According to a doctor’s statement, there was no ground-level implementation, till now. They were only being given assurances, but now the Medical Education Minister, Mr. Girish Mahajan, has set police personnel in every college. There will be temporary force, till April 5, that will then be replaced by the Special Armed Forces of the Maharashtra State Security Corporation, said one of the doctors. By Supraja

Karnataka Govt Says NO To Release Cauvery Water To Tamil Nadu March 24, 2017 15:33

The Karnataka Government has decided not to release any more Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, despite a Supreme Court order directing it to do. The Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra, directed that, all interim orders of releasing 2,000 cusec of water every day should be followed by Karnataka. This will continue to be in force until further orders. The Karnataka state is already suffering from severe drought. The water level in the State's major water reservoirs is 37% cent less than the normal capacity. If the rain deficit increases in the coming months, the State government will be forced to use the dead storage from these dams, said the government. Karnataka's Water Resources Minister MB Patil, said that it would not be able to go with the court orders. "Where do we release 2000 cusec water from? Let me make it very clear, we have 3-4 TMC shortage to cater to the drinking water needs of Bengaluru, Mysuru & other towns and villages," Mr Patil said. The Minister added that it will not be a case of contempt of court, as there was no water to release. “It would be contempt if we had water and then said we will not release,” he added. Cusec (cubic feet per second), measures the flow of water. One TMC, or thousand million cubic water, comes to about 11,000 cusec a day, generally. This is the second time in a year that the Karnataka State is defying the top court. According to the Central Water Commission in Delhi, the water level crisis is much deeper in Tamil Nadu; its reservoirs are 80% deficient. In October, the Karnataka government, refused to release water to Tamil Nadu in compliance with the Supreme Court directive. The court has ordered to release 6000 cusec of water for 6 days. But the State government stepped back after the court rebuked the authorities and therefore, the State's legal team advised the executive not to try their luck. The Supreme Court fixed the final hearing of appeals of the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal (CWDT) on July 11. Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala States filed the appeals against the Dispute Tribunal. Telangana State To Buy Thermal Power From AP March 24, 2017 14:12

The Telangana State (TS) has unveiled its plans to purchase thermal power from Andhra Pradesh (AP), following a tentative agreement between the two states.Under the terms of the contract, the State will purchase the power, at a higher cost, while selling the thermal power produced in the state, at a lower price.Furthermore, the Telangana State Transco, is losing crores of money, due to delay in submission of a report by the high-level panel. This high level panel, is in turn, constituted by the Central government. The share of Andhra Pradesh, in thermal power plants, located in TS is 44%, and TS share in thermal power stations located in AP is 54%.Accordingly, the TS share of power produced by thermal power plants, located in AP is about 2,210 MW, while AP’s share of power produced in thermal power plants located in TS is about 795 MW.Higher coal transportation costs, are the main reason for the cost of power generation, for thermal power plants located in AP. While thermal power plants in TS are located closer to the source of coal, thus reducing the cost of power generation. In AP the highest cost per unit is Rs 20.57 and the lowest is Rs 5.57, while it is Rs 4.69 to Rs 3.60 in TS.This implies that TS is selling power, at the lowest possible price to AP and purchasing it at the possible price. As per calculations made by the officials, the financial burden on TS Transco is about Rs 1,000 crore every year.TS, at the time of separation, had opted to share power as per the agreement reached in the undivided state. Now, TS wants the power plants to be shared on location basis, so that it can utilize the entire power generated in the thermal plants located in Telangana. Moreover, AP can utilize the power generated by plants located in Andhra region. However, the officials have stated that, the State cannot cancel the agreement presently, and hence, it is waiting for the report of the high level panel committees. Once the committee report is submitted, then both the states can take a decision accordingly, said the officials. By Supraja
