Fruit peels as life saving water purifiers

The environmentally conscious worldwide known to be using fruit peels as composition. On the contrary the throwaway item could soon have an even higher calling that's saving lives. The researchers at the National University of Singapore have found that tomato and apple peels act like a sponge in polluted water, immensely decreasing levels of heavy metals, pesticides as well as dyes. Their two-year study explored, for example, that the peel from eight tomatoes could in an hour almost completely remove heavy metal ions such as lead from a litre of water.

Their discovery could advance the way for a promptly available and low-cost way to make drinking water safer for the nearly 800 million people worldwide with the absence of access to clean water. Lead researcher Ramakrishna Mallampati said this could especially be crucial for those in remote regions without easy access to water purification devices at the same time where groundwater close to villages rendered harmful due to industrial pollution.
