Stress Free Work Place Need for Employees and Employer November 05, 2013 17:27

A work place that is stress free is as much a need for the employer as it is for the employee. We frequently come across the news of employees in senior levels of the executive positions ending their life due to stress at their work place.  It is the duty of the HR department to see that the working environment is free from tensions and stress.  Mostly the stress is heard in private companies engaged in computer programming and it is not totally uncommon in other private and public organizations too. Most of the complaints are that they are treated as robots but not human beings and their problems are ignored by the management.  Impossible targets fixed by the senior executives will keep the employee under him work under stress.  The output of an employee will come down drastically when the employee is subjected to work under stress.  That way it is also necessary for the management to see that proper work atmosphere is ensured for the smooth functioning. As the employees spend more time at the work place compared to the time they spend at home, the conditions of the work place leave strong impacts on the employee to carry it home too. It is true that the management wants maximum output and the employees want maximum freedom if we keep the remuneration part aside.  But a line has to be drawn between them.  In order to cope up with the competition, the management tries to stretch the scope of work of the employees where the tension starts mounting. Although HRs hear about the problems of the employees, normal complaint of the employees is that as HR is part of the management, generally they turn a deaf ear to the complaint or try to blame the employees. There are many events to make the management and the employees to come to a common platform and strengthen their good relations like recreation, cultural programs, occasional meetings, sports and games events etc. But the real change comes with the understanding that all are instrumental in the total program of the business unit.  Everyone is dependent on others and everyone is important in their allotted slot of work! -SriJa

Back to basics, Lady Gaga says go nude October 18, 2013 16:42

Forget rain or sunshine, just do what you want. That's what Lady Gaga seems to say to her fans. As she goes nude for the single, she urges everyone to go back to the basics. In her case, it is shedding clothes to the last scrap. In a world where appropriate clothing is everything, not wearing anything may just solve everyone's problems. There will be no more insecurity about fitting into those impossible trousers and there will absolutely be no more blame games on revealing clothing leading to rape. Such a culture exists in the pacific islands, where polynasian people walk around naked. They are so acclimatized to looking at their fellow human beings naked that it is not a point to discuss anymore. No more padding, no more hiding the flab. Without any clothes, no one can hide their non-assests. Consequently, there will be no pressure on anyone to look a certain way just for the sake of it. It may even bring out a culture of healthy living rather than superficial beauty. On the downside, however, we may find lesser colors around us. Let's not get carried away with what Lady Gaga says and stick to staying warm in the coming winter months. For her part, Lady Gaga and R Kelly will continue to croon “Do what you want with my body.” (AW: Sruthi)

How technology has changed our health issues October 02, 2013 17:09

Technology is omnipresent. From business to fitness and from shopping to our personal relationships, technology has become centrifugal to human existence. While it  is certainly a boon, on the flipside, it's fast adding up to our physical woes. Let's find out how. Text Neck If you are gleaning through this write-up slumped in a chair or leaning on to your desk - your head  craned, your shoulders  curved and arms bent by your extreme side - then beware! Termed as a ‘text neck’ problem, physical therapists, doctors and chiropractors opine that carpel tunnel syndrome is a passé, and ‘text neck’ is the new tech-induced body ailment. Sleep Disorders Over exposure to the artificial light from TV and computer screen affects melatonin production by toppling circadian rhythms and thwarting deep and restorative sleep. Every day, late night computer usage, without any frequent breaks  can trigger sleep disorders, stress and depressive symptoms. Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) If you are someone who is glued to laptop for 6 to 7 hours daily and often complain of mild to moderate dry or watery eyes, then possibly you are suffering from computer vision syndrome. To speak like a layman, if your eyes tear often or you suffer from blurred vision, double vision, dry, red eyes, eye irritation, headaches and neck or back pain, then you need to minimize your usage. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome If you shrug off a slight cramp as a muscle pull or a muscle spasm, then know that carpel tunnel syndrome is not a thing to be overlooked. “Numbness in the fingers (especially thumb, index and middle finger), burning, tingling sensation in the palm, pain radiating in upward direction of the hand, tightening of joints and fingers and poor grip while holding objects are a few lethal symptoms of carpel tunnel syndrome.” (AW: Suchorita Dutta)

Victoria Beckham posts awesome coffee portrait September 24, 2013 17:45

Victoria Beckham, one of the most popular fashion trendsetters, posted an awesome portrait of herself on Twitter. The image displays coffee art at its best with New York ‘latte artist’ Michael Breach creating her essence in a cup of hot coffee. A mum of four, Victoria follows her heart with her career while still managing to be the best mother in the world to her kids. When she shared the coffee portrait, the picture was applauded by all for its sheer creativity. Breach created this little piece of heaven for a fundraiser named Macmillan’s coffee morning fundraising campaign. The coffee, sadly, lasted only 3 minutes. The artist's coffee art is famous all over the world and Victoria lent a picture of herself to draw this steaming portrait. Mrs Beckham, a coffee lover, is also in the news for being voted as UK's most inspirational mother. Responding to questions on how she manages both kids and a fashion designing career, she said that it is a juggling act. “It’s no different for me than any other mum. I’d do anything for them. But I also love what I do. I think anyone who says it’s easy is lying,” she noted. Source: Dailymail (AW: Sruthi)

3,000 pounds to sleep! Are you game? September 18, 2013 15:00

Couch potatoes rejoice. Nasa is looking for someone exactly like you. The US space agency is looking for willing volunteers who are up to sleeping continuously for over 2 months straight. Hard? Not hard? Well, this program is part of Nasa's special research that focuses on the effects of microgravity on the human body. In addition to the money, couch potatoes can now be a part of something productive without actually being, ahem, productive. Research to document the effects of microgravity on the human body will not require the volunteers to do anything besides watching TV, internet surfing and playing computer games. There is only one catch. The sleeping beauties will be put up in a tilted bed for the duration of the 70-day project, 24 hours a day. No breaks there. According to the space agency's website, researchers and engineers are studying bed rest as an experimental analog for space flight because extended exposure to a head-down tilt position can duplicate many of the effects of a low-gravity environment. “Of all the potential challenges crew members encounter in the space environment, microgravity has proven to be one of the most difficult to mimic in an experimental setting.” Hence the twist. These 'Pillownauts' would get paid £3,000 per month as part of the research, while their mental health, muscle, bone strength and cardiovascular function is monitored. (AW: Sruthi)
