NRI Department to be set up by TS Government

Telangana government is planning to set up a full-fledged department. This department will deal with the issues of non-resident Telanganites working in the Gulf countries. It will also attract overseas state investments.

Under Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao, the government is already having an NRI affairs wing. The government is also planning to propose to set up offices in districts where information related to migration will be give. The offices will also have a database of overseas migrant workers. Also all the necessary skill training will be provided. Any ody who wants to secure job visa can come to this office.

According to an officer working in this wing even bringing back the bodies of those who die will be part of this new NRI work.

Around 1 million migrants from Telangana are working in the Gulf countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and Yemen. Most of them are working in the construction sector. If they re not educated or have little education, they are forced to work with agents at the time of securing a Visa or in the hands of employers in terms of salary and difficult working conditions.

KCR has asked the officials to submit a report which will help in strengthening and expanding the the NRI division. The officials have given a report with a set of recommendations to the chief minister an year ago.

KCR allocated the NRI portfolio to his son K T Rama Rao along with Industries and Mining portfolios on top of the IT and Municipal Administration.

An official said that "we have studied the successful model of Kerala before preparing the report. But we had to keep one difference in mind. Those who migrate from Kerala are educated and engage themselves in a relatively high paid jobs. But those who migrate from Telangana have little or no education and engage in hard construction sector jobs.”

Most of the migrants are from Karimnagar, Nizamabad and Adilabad districts. While people from East and West Godavari and Kadapa districts migrate to these Gulf countries from Andhra Pradesh.
